Trump Thinks Disrespectful Anthem Kneelers Should Leave The US

Taking a knee for the National Anthem for the next NFL season is going to get expensive for any team (though some owners have already pledged to pay any players’ fines), but President Trump had some even deeper advice for the players who feel the need to disrespect our flag.

He thinks they should consider taking up residence elsewhere in the world.

Marketwatch reports:

‘You have to stand proudly for the national anthem or you shouldn’t be playing. You shouldn’t be there. Maybe you shouldn’t be in the country.’ — President Trump

That’s what President Donald Trump had to say on Fox and Friends upon hearing the news that NFL owners reached a deal on Wednesday to keep players who want to kneel in protest during “The Star-Spangled Banner” off the field.

“I think the people pushed it forward, this was not me. I brought it out. I think the people pushed it forward,” Trump went on to say. “This country is very smart. We have very smart people and that’s something ideally could have been taken care of when it first started. It would have been a lot easier.”

Trump has clearly played a major role in making the protests such a divisive issue. Last year, at a rally in Alabama, he said NFL owners should respond to the players by saying, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”

From Trump’s lips to NFL owners’ ears.

The new rule states if players are on the field during the anthem, they must stand. If not, they must stay in the locker room or the team will face fines. At that point, it will be up to the team how it disciplines the player.

“We believe today’s decision will keep our focus on the game and the extraordinary athletes who play it — and on our fans who enjoy it,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement.

The Players’ Association was not pleased by the decision.
