Remember the Pop-Tart gun that got a little kid in trouble? Or the kid who was suspended for playing with little green plastic army men? The list goes on and on… and today we’ve added a new incident that makes teachers look even more ridiculous.
A 13-year-old Sampson County, North Carolina, student received a two-day suspension for a drawing of a stick figure holding a gun.
The student, a 7th grader, allegedly drew the image of the gun before the February 14 Parkland school shooting, but officials at Roseboro Salemburg Middle School decided they could take no chances.
WRAL quoted Sampson County School’s Superintendent Eric Bracy saying, “Due to everything happening in the nation, we’re just being extra vigilant about all issues of safety.” Bracy added, “There are some things that list possible threats or things like that. We’ve got category one, two, three and four, which sort of grades potential incidents and the level or seriousness.”
The students’ father, James Herring, was flabbergasted. He said, “I see a guy in a race car souped-up. I see a tower that he build. I see him holding his gun, he’s a deer hunter. I see him with a magician and I see him as a Ninja Turtle. [He’s] just expressing himself, nothing violent.”
Herring added, “When I see that, I see a normal 13-year-old boy. I drew pictures like this, any other person of his age drew drawings like this. It’s nothing to get expelled from school for.”
