Since when did Aaron Rodgers — one of the highest paid athletes in the league — turn into a beatnik, tree-hugging, anthem-kneeling hipster? He’s in the middle of blue-collar America, where football fans take their sport more seriously than anyone else in this great nation.
And they love our flag and country, too. For Rodgers to say such a silly thing is mind-blowing. See below.
NFL players across the league have spoken out against President Donald Trump’s comments from last week in Alabama, but Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers is the league’s biggest star to comment on the issue.
Rodgers took to Instagram on Wednesday with a picture of he and his teammates locking arms during the anthem, and his caption was very sarcastic.
“I can’t imagine what kind of social media attacks these cameramen must be enduring after taking a knee during the anthem and wearing a hat.
#unity #equalityforall #love #cometogether #invitationtojoin”
Rodgers also wants fans in attendance to lock arms during the anthem. He told reporters on Tuesday that locking arms signifies unity with his teammates. According to Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette Rodgers said it isn’t about disrespecting the military.
“This is about equality,” Rodgers said. “This is about unity and love and growing together as a society, and starting a conversation around something that may be a little bit uncomfortable for people. But we’ve got to come together and talk about these things and grow as a community, as a connected group of individuals in our society, and we’re going to continue to show love and unity.”
It’s safe to expect more peaceful protests during this week’s games and likely for the remainder of the season. And it’s quite possible that more players in the league will join, especially if President Trump continues to call out the players and coaches.
Also, here’s the official “I Proudly Stand For The Anthem” t-shirt (we have hoodie and v-neck options, too!) that has part of the proceeds going to the National Coalition of Homeless Veterans!
